NEW YORK — It was only fitting that the floodgates opened for the Detroit Tigers in their latest victory in the Bronx once a former Bomber put them ahead for good.
Former Yankee Gleyber Torres hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning, the first two of the 11 runs that Detroit would plate in their second consecutive rout of the New York Yankees, a 11-1 decision inside Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. One night after scoring nine runs in the seventh inning, the Tigers scored eight runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined to blow the game open.
All nine starters for the Tigers recorded at least one hit, with Spencer Torkelson and Dillon Dingler each recording three base knocks. Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Cole Keith all homered for Detroit during the late-inning barrage.
Jack Flaherty went five scoreless innings while striking out seven to record his eighth win of the season.
Detroit’s win now gives it the best record in the American League, as Toronto’s loss against the Houston Astros puts the Tigers a half-game ahead of the Blue Jays. The Yankees remain three games out of first place in the American League East behind Toronto.
Carlos Rodón lost despite allowing just those two runs on Torres’ single in the fifth, as the lefty starter gave up five hits and struck out six. New York went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, as potential Yankees’ rallies were stunted by three double plays that the Tigers turned on the infield.
