PHOENIX — Home is where the heart is for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And the runs. And the homers. And the wins.
Continuing one of its best runs in the desert in franchise history, Arizona continued its home dominance with a 7-4 victory over the San Diego Padres in the second of a three-game set between NL West rivals. The win improved the Diamondbacks to 23-8 at Chase Field, the best home record in baseball.
It did not hurt Arizona that it had its ace on the mound, Zack Greinke, though he had far from a vintage performance on Wednesday night. Just four pitches into the game, San Diego had the lead after a Yangervis Solarte solo home run down the right field line. Solarte had a hand in extending San Diego’s lead in the third inning, lining a single softly into left field with two out to score Franchy Cordero, who had reached one batter before on a triple that was misplayed in flight by right field by David Peralta.
It didn’t take long for the Diamondbacks to respond in the third inning and take the lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the game. After he retired the first two men in the bottom of the third, Padres starter Luis Perdomo walked David Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt, and Jake Lamb made sure Perdomo paid for those free passes by cracking a three-run home run to give Arizona its first lead. Two batters later, Diamondbacks second baseman Brandon Drury connected on a two-run home run to give Arizona a crooked number of five runs in the third inning. Those two home runs now run Arizona’s league-leading home run total to 79, with 50 of those coming inside of Chase Field. Greinke went five innings to earn his eighth win of the season, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out eight batters.
As you could probably see, we had a photo presence at Wednesday night’s game, as it was a pleasure to have Arizona-based photographer Sammantha-Maria Herbaugh standing adjacent to the D-Backs dugout and snapping quality pictures inside of Chase Field.
