BALTIMORE — One swing from yesterday seems to have allowed the Baltimore Orioles to get back into the swing of things once more.
Fresh off his walk-off home run on Thursday afternoon, Anthony Santander hit the first of five home runs for the Orioles on Friday night during a 7-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Both Colton Cowser and James McCann hit two home runs each as Corbin Burnes pitched seven shutout innings while striking out eight.
After going 3-9 in their last 12 games prior to Thursday, the Orioles have now won two straight games for the first time since a three-game run from Sept. 1-3. And despite the offensive struggles in the month of September, which included getting shut out three times in an eight-game span, Baltimore still has the Major League lead in home runs, which was extended with its five-homer barrage tonight.
Though Baltimore still sits four games behind the New York for the American League East division lead after the Yankees won in extra innings in Oakland, the Orioles are still in the driver’s seat to making the postseason, and would do so if they won the next two games against the Tigers this weekend.
