FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The TCU women’s basketball team did its part on Sunday to set up the latest “biggest game in program history” in a season full of history-making moments.
Hailey Van Lith scored 26 points while Sedona Prince dominated on the inside with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks as No. 10 TCU made short work of No. 17 West Virginia 71-50 inside Schollmaier Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Horned Frogs set the school record for most win in Big 12 Conference play with 14, and are now even with Baylor at the top of the league with two games remaining — one of those against the Bears in Waco in the regular-season finale a week from today.
Both Van Lith and Prince wasted no time in setting the tone of the game, with the former scoring seven points in the frame while the latter had four rebounds and three blocks in those first 10 minutes as the Horned Frogs opened up a 20-9 lead. TCU shot 50 percent from the field (8-for-16) while making the Mountaineers miss on 11 of their 15 shots from the floor. Prince’s jumper at the 4:51 mark gave the Horned Frogs a 6-5 lead, and TCU proceeded to never trail for the rest of the contest.
TCU’s lead grew to 19 at halftime and 21 early in the third quarter before the Mountaineers responded with seven straight points — five on free throws by Jordan Harrison — to cut the lead to 14. Van Lith then went on a personal 7-0 run to restore the Horned Frogs’ 21-point advantage, and TCU cruised the rest of the way.
West Virginia shot a season-low 31 percent in its worst loss of the season. J.J. Quinerly, the fourth-leading scorer in the conference at nearly 20 points per game, was limited to a team-high 13 points for the Mountaineers (21-6, 11-5), who lost for just the third time in 11 games.
