NEW YORK — Columbia guard Riley Weiss, the Ive League’s leading scorer and one of the top marksmen in the country, did everything but show her best for the first six quarters against the team that’s been the Ancient Eight’s standard-bearer for over a decade, with Friday’s first half almost certainly proving to be her season’s nadir amidst all of her other successes. Before the final 20 minutes of the most important game of the Lions’ season, Weiss’ head coach had the perfect message as the two headed to the locker room … and after coached kicked out the star player of said locker room.
“I told her to leave the locker room and come back in when she left her ego outside,” Columbia head coach Megan Griffith said to her star.
Weiss’ absence from the locker room lasted about five seconds as she reset. Then she re-entered the room. And soon after, she regained her form as the top player in the league in leading the Lions back to the top of the Ivy.
After a frustrating first half, Weiss scored 11 of her 23 points in the third quarter as Columbia stormed back from an 11-point second-quarter deficit to knock off No. 24 Princeton 70-56 inside Levien Gymnasium on Friday night. Senior forward Perri Page led all scorers with 25 points as the Lions completed a season sweep of the Tigers while also tying Princeton atop the Ivy League standings at 7-2.
