COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — We may not know for a couple of weeks whether the Maryland Terrapins football team is the real deal in 2025, though that doesn’t mean that they can’t show off their highly-touted quarterback whom, after his first three games in college football, is serving notice that he and his Terps might be ready to contend in the Big Ten sooner rather than later.
Freshman Malik Washington threw for 261 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as Maryland scored the first 31 points on its way to a 44-17 victory over Towson inside SECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins scored the game’s first 34 points, and the defense put together another stifling performance that included its La’khi Roland’s 100-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the quarter, the first 100-yard pick-six since 1962. The defense’s 33 points allowed through three games are its fewest since allowing 30 to start the 2001 season, a year that the Terrapins won 10 games and the Atlantic Coast Conference championship outright.
Maryland is 3-0 for the fourth time in the past five seasons, and, with the 6-5 local product in Washington at the controls at quarterback, the Terrapins are hoping this year bucks the trend of those recent campaigns eventually being blighted by mid-season swoons.
“On offense, what we were looking to be able to do was start fast. We scored points on our first six drives,” Maryland head coach Mike Locksley said. “Washington was really efficient for us. He did a good job getting the offense rolling early on and gaining some momentum.”
