EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY — If New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams had his way, teammate and fellow wideout Garrett Wilson will have earned a new shoe deal after tonight, and maybe inspired a Michael Jordan-like silhouette for the play that won the game for Gang Green — as well as possibly saved the 2024 season.
Wilson continued to thrive with two touchdown catches, including an Odell Beckham-like one-handed catch in the back of the end zone midway through the fourth quarter that gave the Jets the lead for good, as New York defeated the AFC South-leading Houston Texans 21-13 on Halloween night inside MetLife Stadium to snap a five-game losing streak. Adams himself also caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the game-winning score, as each of the Jets’ three drives in the second half ended in the end zone.
The middle of those three drives concluded in the most dramatic of fashion, as Wilson went almost spread eagle with his legs while jumping and reaching up with his right hand to snag a 26-yard touchdown reception in the back of the end zone on a third-and-19 to give New York a 14-10 advantage. The play was initially ruled an incomplete pass, but not too long after New York interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich threw the red challenge flag, members of the Jets were seen jumping on the sidelines before the official reversal was announced, as replays showed that, after Wilson made the Wilson-brand leather football stick in his right hand, his left foot and, subsequently, his left shin, touched down in bounds along the end line before his left knee went out of bounds.
For the second time in a few minutes, the crowd erupted. And for the second time, a one-handed touchdown on the north end of MetLife Stadium immediately captured the imagination of a primetime audience, with Wilson’s snag eerily reminiscent of former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr’s extended single-handed snag against the Dallas Cowboys on a Sunday night game in 2014.
“For it to even come up in that convo, I’m blessed,” Wilson said. “I’m honored.”
