HARRISON, N.J. — In the middle of the second half, a foray by the New York Red Bulls into the opponent’s offensive half forced New York City FC defender Alex Callens into blasting the ball high and out of play with his left foot, conceding a corner kick that was clearly signaled by the assistant referee.
The Red Bulls never took that ensuing corner. Four seconds later, they scored the game-winning goal. Immediately after the ball bulged into the back of the net, chaos broke loose and short tempers boiled over.
In other words, just another day in the Hudson River Derby.
Daniel Royer scored both goals for the Red Bulls, including his header that came seconds after his team restarted the game with a throw-in instead of the corner kick that was signaled, as they defeated rival New York City FC 2-1 on Sunday night at Red Bull Arena.
